NHL gearing up for 2 games at Edgewood Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe – KCRA Sacramento

Excitement is building in South Lake Tahoe where the National Hockey League is gearing up to play two games this weekend on a temporary ice rink built at the 18th Fairway of Edgewood Golf Course.The NHL has hosted 30 outdoor games before – at football, baseball and soccer stadiums, but this is the first time they’ve played on top of a golf course. While the players are kept out of the public eye to ensure COVID-19 compliance, the team mascots were found wandering through Heavenly Village on Friday.“It’s a very, very special occasion and we’re all so happy to be here in Lake Tahoe for the outdoor games tomorrow,” said the Vegas Team’s mascot, the Golden Knight.The Las Vegas Golden Knights team mascot, joined with mascots from the Colorado Avalanche, and Boston Bruins at an outdoor rink at Heavenly Village to kick off the weekend.Meanwhile, former NHL players Shane O’Brien, Jimmy Hayes, and Scottie Upshall visited the pro hockey rink at Edgewood, saying this unique opportunity is a dream for players.“We were talking about how outdoor games can kind of be crazy because it’s already hard enough to play in the NHL, and then you add in a weather element,” Hayes said. “But I think the experience for these guys is once in a lifetime and it’s something you dream as a kid to play in an NHL game outdoors.”The games will air on KCRA 3. On Saturday, the Colorado Avalanche will play the Vegas Golden Knights starting at noon. On Sunday the start time is 11:00 am for the game against the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers.
